Cosmetic Fillers FAQ

What are the different types of JUVÉDERM®?
There are four forms of JUVÉDERM:  JUVÉDERM Ultra , JUVÉDERM, Ultra Plus, JUVÉDERM Ultra XC and JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC. They are all FDA approved hyaluronic acid injectable fillers that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin by smoothing facial wrinkles and folds. The XC formulations of both products have added lidocaine, an anesthetic to make the injection more comfortable. The Ultra Plus is a thicker formulation. Recently the FDA approved, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® as the first injectable gel indicated for correcting age-related volume loss in the midface.

What is Juvederm Ultra XC?
JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injectable gel is a colorless hyaluronic acid gel that contains a small amount of local anesthetic (lidocaine) and is injected into facial tissue to smooth wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and act as a cushioning agent.

What is Juvéderm™ VOLUMA™?
Juvederm™ Voluma™ is the latest of the Juvederm range of hyaluronic acid fillers  and has been FDA approved to correct age-related volume loss in the midface, such as  the cheeks, and cheekbones.Additionally, due to its versatility it is also suitable for adding definition to the jaw line and chin. What is the difference between Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Voluma ?
When comparing Juvederm Voluma vs Juvederm Ultra XC for example, you would notice that the texture of Ultra is similar to pudding while the texture of Voluma is closer to Jello. This thicker texture gives the new filler its unique lifting properties and also leads to differences as to where it can be injected in the face. Voluma is specifically designed to be injected deep in the dermis and to lay right on top of your facial bones. This ability to sit deep and stay in place is exactly what makes Voluma useful for particular injection sites and treatment outcomes. Voluma works best when it’s injected into the upper cheek or middle cheek or the chin.

What is the difference in the longevity of Juvederm Ultra XC vs Juvederm Voluma?
The company's claims for these products would indicate that Juvederm lasts "up to 12 months" and Voluma "up to two years". This is based on subjective assessment by the patients. However, there is variability depending on the patient's metabolism etc. It seems that the larger the accumulation (that is the injection amount within a given area) the longer it lasts up to a certain limit.

What are possible side effects?
Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injection-site reactions such as: redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all skin-injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.
